Raise the stones of Callanish
The Outer Hebrides, about 2900 BC. A township on the moor has decided to build something that will outlast all of them.
Click the knoll to quarry stone. Hire quarriers to cut it and creel carriers to haul it, and watch them walk the trackway from the quarry to the pile. When there's enough, raise the next stone: it's dragged in on a sledge, tipped up into its socket and lands with a thud the whole moor feels.
Every stone you raise brings something new to the township. Close the ring of 13, then build out the four arms: all 47 stones where they stand today, laid out from the 1872 survey of the real site.
What's in it
- A crew you can watch: quarriers on the benches, carriers with their creels, sledge teams, then horse and cart. Every hire walks out of a blackhouse door and gets to work.
- The heave: click in time with the rope as a stone is hauled in and the crew pull it home faster
- Things to catch. Quartz veins show in the rock. The white cow wanders up from Loch Roag. The ceilidh fire builds by the township, and when it roars, everyone runs to carry.
- Night shifts by the peat fires, and seasons turning over the moor
- The ring of 13, then the east and west rows
- The moon row to the south: seers read the moon and store its light in the stones. Pay it out by night, and more under a full moon.
- The avenue: the last 19 stones go up in four convoys, hauled along a log trackway to the pace of the waulking song
- An Antiquarian who wanders in with confident theories about who built it. All of them wrong.

Free in your browser. This is an early build: the ring, the east and west rows, the moon row and the avenue are in. The ending is still to come, and the numbers late in the game still need tuning.
